Centennial Awards

Undergraduate Brothers James Barksdale (Spring ’11), the current Basileus of Tau Psi from Charlotte, NC; Nathan Murphy (Spring ’11) of Fontana, CA; and Terrence Jones (Spring ’08) of Ahoskie, NC, completed the 2010-2011 academic year at NCCU with a 3.0 or above cumulative grade point average. Brother Barksdale, a wide receiver on the Eagles football team, was also honored as an academic student-athlete.
Brother Joseph Kevin Carpenter, III (Spring ’91) was recognized as one of the Second District Scholarship Award winners during the meeting of the Second District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity on April 30, 2011.
Brother Willie Cooper (Fall ’62) has written a book to honor the memory of his great grandfather, George W. Reid, a Bertie County, North Carolina, Civil War veteran who served as a private in the 36th regiment. Brother Cooper’s book, titled The Forgotten Legacy: Black Soldiers and Sailors Who Fought in the Civil War, 1862-1866, is a salute to the 200,000-plus black soldiers and over 30,000 black sailors who fought to save this nation and defeat slavery. The book can be purchased online via amazon.com. Brother Cooper will be available during Homecoming at the Tau Psi Reunion to sign copies of his book.
Brother Edmund “P. J.” Lewis, Jr. (Fall ’06) has been elected as the President of the Detroit Metropolitan Chapter of the North Carolina Central University Alumni Association. Brother Oliver "O. J." Jenkins, Jr. (Spring '05) was elected Vice President of the same chapter, and Brother William Lewis (Winter '52) is the chapter's Chaplain.
Brother Jamie Patterson (Fall ’98), a native of Red Springs, NC, was recently presented the “Young Entrepreneur of the Year” award by the Durham, NC, Chamber of Commerce. A 2005 Group Sales Intern with the Durham Bulls Baseball Club, Brother Patterson owns Subject 2 Change Custom Apparel Design Company with his partner, Nykia Elvy. Subject 2 Change was selected to be the official apparel provider for NCCU’s Marching Band trip to Pasadena for the 2011 Tournament of Roses Parade, and recently the company completed an apparel order for the Durham Bulls Grounds Crew. Brother Patterson has a B.S. degree in sports management and an M.S. degree in athletic administration
