Tau Psi Endowed Scholarship
An endowed scholarship at NCCU in the name of Tau Psi was the brain-child of Brother Floyd Ferebee (Fall 1963) during the planning stages of the 60 th year reunion in 1992. An endowed scholarship is one that makes awards from the interest, only, generated from the principal. The scholarship was unofficially endowed (without an official endowment agreement in place) in 1998 when the minimum requirement of $5,000 in contributions was in the fund. Brother Robert L. Woods (Fall, 1966) was named Chairman of the Scholarship Committee). The Planning Committee for our 60 th year reunion approved of asking each brother to attempt to contribute at least $100 per year to the scholarship fund.
At our 70th year reunion in 2002, Brother Woods reported that 59 brothers had collectively contributed $11,519.97 to the fund. Brother Benjamin F. Hill (Spring 1972) challenged a minimum of 75 brothers contribute a minimum of $1,000 each by our 75 th year reunion to be held in 2007.
After all brothers, who had contributed at least $500, had been canvassed, criteria for making awards from the Tau Psi Scholarship were established and an official Endowment Agreement was signed by Brother Woods on 11-13-06, NCCU Chancellor, James Ammons on 11-15-06 and Vice Chancellor for Institutional Development, Kate'y Assem on 11-17-06. Scholarships will be awarded based on the following criteria:
- Must have a minimum of 30 credit hours or at least 2 semesters credit as a full time student
- Must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0
- Priority will be given to members of the Tau Psi Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.,who are classified as sophomores or juniors; however, non-Tau Psi Chapter members may be selected. It is also strongly recommended that each candidate for the scholarship show proof of being a current registered voter. A selection committee of graduate members of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. will recommend a candidate(s) to the University selection committee for approval
- Must have a documented need for financial assistance
In the Spring of 2006, Brother Hill and Brother Harold Epps (Spring, 1972) spearheaded a fundraising effort for the scholarship fund. As of 07-09-07, a total of 98 brothers had collectively contributed more than $35,000.
Contributions may be mailed to: Brother Robert Woods, 2242 Burlington Road, Roxboro, NC 27574. Make check payable to NCCU Foundation, Inc.; Memo: Tau Psi Endowed Scholarship. Online contributions may be made via the secure NCCU Foundation site. Brothers who contribute online are asked to notify Brother Robert Woods (336) 599-0835 of their donations so that they can be identified and recognized by Tau Psi Chapter. For more information on the scholarship or the fundraising efforts, contact Brother Woods, Brother Harold Epps, or Brother Ben Hill. Tau Psi Data Form and Directory
In order to produce an up-to-date Tau Psi Directory, we need all Tau Psi brothers who have not done so to complete the Online Tau Psi Data Form below or print this version and mail it to Brother Ferebee. Please return the form to Brother Ferebee at one of his addresses listed above.
